Books Around the House

Books Around the House

Apart from our front-facing bookshelf, we have books in different places around the house — upstairs on the landing, downstairs in the hallway, in the kitchen, and of course in A’s room.

It wasn’t something I planned in a structured way, but it’s worked well. I try to keep the books in each area somewhat relevant. In the kitchen, for example, there are books around food or gardening, so A can connect what he sees in the book with what’s happening around him.

What I’ve noticed is that he naturally moves towards them throughout the day, picking up a book wherever he is. Sometimes he sits with it on his own, and sometimes he brings it over to us.

Having books spread out like this means they’re always within reach, not stored away or brought out at a specific time, but simply part of the environment. He goes to them on his own, often returning to the same ones.
